Turner.Prize

We visited the Tate Britian shortly after we arrived yesterday. We specifically went to see The Turner Prize. On the way into the show Fiona Banner airplanes were on display. I found them quite fasinating. Like Damien Hirst, but not like him at all, her planes allow the viewer to get close to something that ordinarally we would not have much contact with. For example Hirst's shark. The massively large plane that pointed straight down, almost as in defeat was interesting, the texture on the outside resembled feathers.

When entering the Turner Prize, I was actually quite bummed at the turn out, I'm sure that they all had great concepts but I looked but walked through the paintings and video. I liked the concept of Angela De La Cruz's work, "painting as both object and image" but to be honest I thought her peices looked better through a photograph. I did however like Susan Philipsz sounds installation. It Felt very soothing to walk into the room with the three speakers. White walls, Dull lighting, surround sound. It almost sounded as though there were two of her singing in there. It felt spiritual and calming. Almost meditative. Though I have no idea what she was saying I felt it in her voice. I also felt like I was "paying my respects to someone who had died. The people standing, sitting, listening in the room feel to become apart of the piece. Its interesting to see how the people interact with it. It's not tangible to it is there. It is there through one of our senses and that sense being sound. They walk in slow down, stop, walk quitely, sit, listen, look around.
